Allergies: the update

So we thought Gil's bad skin was a result of a milk allergy. After three weeks of being pretty meticulous about milk products, I am less sure now.

Our allergist had to cancel our appointment last minute so I talked to her on the phone after hours (how refreshing!). I was so impressed by the fact that she was willing to make after-hours time- especially when I know she has children at home herself.

So, as I said, I am now less convinced that it is a milk allergy. Maybe dog?
the allergist sent us for blood work (poor Taren had to take Gil) and we will know more in 10 days.

Overheard in the bathroom

"Mommy, can I have my privacy?  I know how to wipe my own booty."

What's next?  Driving a car?

The professor

Gil loves to sit in the rocking chair in vake's room. He climbs up, sits, does a little rocking, and thinks his deep thoughts.

His personality is so different from his brother's.

The glasses are a hit.

I honestly cannot believe that I am writing this post because in one short day, we've gone from this-

-to this. Gil can now see! It is the craziest thing. He is a new child. He is already- today- walking more than he ever did. He is laughing so much as he is truly seeing things for the first time.

I cannot believe how quickly he figured it out! Hurray! I was prepared to have the glasses be a huge struggle but by the end of day one, he was wearing the glasses for 5 hours at a stretch.

What a great result.

Baby glasses

They're here.

As most of you know, little Gil needs glasses. He's very very farsighted. We knew that he would get a prescription for them if he did not show vast improvement.

As strange as it sounds, I spent a lot of time researching the frames. The consensus from the group of parents who have kids wearing glasses is you want hingeless for the little ones. There are two companies who make them and I picked the solo bambinis- I just think they are better looking than the ones made by Miraflex.

So the solo bambini frames do not have a distributor in Richmond- the nearest is in Charlottesville. After doing more research, I ordered the frames from the distributor in California with the notion that I was going to get the lenses put in in Richmond. That turned out to be easier said than done, but miraculously, Walmart Optical was willing to fit the lenses- and for literally one fourth the cost of a private optician, which is pretty remarkable considering that you've typically got to update the prescription with frequency.

We introduced the glasses to Gil tonight. To say that he hates them would be the understatement of the century.

Update on little Gil

Poor little Gil. For such a sweet, mild mannered child, he's had more trips to the doctor lately than you can shake a stick at.

While I was away at a conference, Eric figured out that his "bad skin" that I had just chalked up to bring his father's son was likely allergies. We had a lucky break that the allergist had an opening and sure enough, we are in the process of figuring out what this little love is actually allergic to.

And if that's not enough, his glasses are here. He's still farsighted. I am to thank for this, genetically speaking. You would be surprised how hard it is to get glasses for a baby. Wheeeeee.

The good news is we all seem to be recovering from our colds.

Poor little one

My little angel took an awful face plant today on the way to school. He was running and lost his balance. It was pretty godawful.

He wouldn't let me take a picture of it while he was awake- here's the picture I got once he was asleep. Thank goodness his teeth didn't get broken.
