The Move: FAQs

Ok, so the questions that people are asking about the move fall into three broad categories: job, geography, and family and life situation.

1.  Job.

     A.  What is Eric going to be doing?  Eric took an amazing job with Jeld-Wen Corporation, which is the world's largest maker of windows and doors.  He will be responsible for the company's labor and employment issues, globally.

     B.  What is Alison going to be doing?  A little less clear at the minute.  I am in the process of waiving into the Oregon Bar and then we'll see.  I'm pretty much open to anything: prosecuting or defense, civil or criminal.  I'm going to get my license and then get out there and make some connections and see what makes sense.  It is a little hard to know what would be a good fit without being on the ground there but I am pretty sure I'll find something I love.

     C.  What is Vake going to be doing?  Vake's job will be the four-year-old program at Roosevelt Elementary School.  He will go probably 4 days a week.

     D.  What is Gil going to be doing?  Being as cute as ever!

2.  Geography.

    A.  So where is Klamath Falls, really?  It is 5.5 hours south of Portland, 5.5 hours north of San Francisco.

     B.  What is Klamath Falls near?  Crater Lake and Mount Shasta.

     C.  What's the weather like?  Cold cold winters and weather like San Diego between April and October.

     D.  How big is Klamath Falls?  About 40,000 people.

     E.  Is there shopping there?  Not really, other than the Fred Meyer.

     F.  Is it beautiful?  Absolutely.

3.  Family and Life Situation.

     A.  How is Alison taking it?  I am hanging in there.  Obviously, it is a massive change but I am really excited for the opportunity for Eric.

     B.  How is Mary Sabra?  She is remarkably sanguine about the whole situation.  Many people forget that she spent her childhood as a Navy junior so she is very matter-of-fact about moving.  She is excited for the hiking and out-of-doors.

     C.  How is Vake doing?  He is, as usual, totally unphased.  He is looking forward to having bunkbeds.

     D.  Where are you all going to live.  932 N. Eldorado Street, Klamath Falls, OR.  It is in the Roosevelt school district, which was impressive when we toured there.

     E.  When is the move actually happening?  Eric will be there to start work August 5.  Alison and the children will be there on August 24.

     F.  Are you taking the dogs?  Yes.

     G.  What are you doing with the house on Boulevard?  We are selling it.

     H.  How's the packing going?  Slowly.

We're getting there.  Rome was not built in a day, you know.  But we are looking forward to a new chapter, albeit a surprising one!

Countdown!

Ok! So the good news is that Eric and I are checking stuff off of our list.

We found a place to live in Klamath Falls.  I am in the process of getting my bar application done- I've got to go and get fingerprinted and update one more document and write a monster check (!) and then I should be good to go on that.  We've arranged to have the cars shipped and purchased plane tickets to fly out there!  Yikes!

So, there's a lot to be done still.  I got a lot of the furniture that we won't be taking transferred to an excellent home today- WHEW!  I forgot how heavy it was and what a pain moving is!  Eric and I also got rid of a TON of old clothes today- also feels like a huge step in the right direction.  We also have packed up a lot of the basement now, too.  Our goal is to get everything out by July 12, which is the day that our moving truck will drop off the trailer that we then have to load.

We've just got to keep on keeping on.

It will be interesting to see what we wind up doing house and decoration wise.  We've found that we don't use a home office as much as we thought, so that's one room that I am reasonably happy to eliminate from the lineup.  I'm working on a donation to Fantastic Thrift, too.

Carry on.  Carry on.

Wow! What a month!

So as you've probably noticed, I've been totally AWOL for the past month. The reason is that Eric and I have some really big news!

We are moving to Oregon for him to take a new job! I know, right? It is a lesson in never say never. A great job fell out of the sky- too great to pass up!

So we will be in Klamath Falls- about 5 hours from Portland and 5 hours from San Francisco. We've found a house and vake will go to the local elementary school for the 4 year old program.

There are two hard parts- being away from family and giving up my job. Wow. A lot harder than I thought! But we are hanging in there...

On the road again.

Whew! After a whirlwind trip to Oregon, we are on our way to family vacation. (Robbers, Brian spencer is watching our house and he has guns!).

We are now entering hour 11 of driving. Yikes.

Unbelievable

Perhaps it is that I am not traveling enough but I am connected to the Internet on an airplane. Unbelievable.
